Olney Community Collaborative kicks in the School Year with Fun in the Sun

The Olney Community Collaborative kicked off the season of welcoming students and families back to school by hosting the 4th annual Back to School Block Party at Lowell School on August 14th.  With event partners – Hand 2 Paw and Island Taste – we distributed 370 backpacks to Olney students who were eagerly anticipating their return to neighborhood schools. In addition to backpacks, students received school supplies donated by our local State Farm Insurance Agency.

The Block Party has become a staple event for our neighborhood. In past years, the event was hosted in front of businesses on the 5th Street Business Corridor. As it continued to grow, we searched for a wider space that would allow business owners, families, and resource agencies to gather together and participate in shared activities.

This year, Principal Dr. Benita Jessup opened the Lowell School Playground to us and our partners. OCC expanded the event to include resource tables, a DJ, family fun and sweet treats. Adults and children enjoyed an exciting water balloon fight, Jump Fitness Courses, bounce houses and games on the play equipment. We even included our furry friends. Hand2Paw passed out treats, pet supplies, toys, and litter boxes.

We send a special thank you to our donors and partners including Suzi at Diva Beauty, Jeff at State Farm, Kadene at Island Taste and the entire Team of Hand2Paw. We also want to thank our resource vendors who attended to share resources and programs:
